We are finally back on our feet and going out to enjoy fine food since the birth of our baby. However dining out has taken a new turn. We have added a new criteria to our restaurant list: child-friendliness. The restaurants at Garden City’s Town Square Restaurant Precinct appear to be perfect for families. We chose Hatch & Co for lunch as there was a particular dish that I was craving for. We have been there a few times and enjoyed the food there. The restaurant was also quite spacious and there was plenty of room for our pram.

Hatch & Co Hatch & Co We started with Braised Pork Empanadas with Chimichurri ($6) for entree. It was full of flavour and went well with the Chimichurri sauce.

Pork Empanadas I ordered my favourite Angel Hair Pasta with Prawns, Garlic, Chilli and Lemon ($19). I have tried this dish twice previously and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I couldn’t say the same this time. It seemed like something was missing and it wasn’t as good as I remembered. Or perhaps my tastebuds changed during pregnancy and after birth?

Angel Hair Pasta with Prawns D ordered Beef Burger with Chips ($16) . The melted Cheddar was oozing out and screaming to be eaten. It looked so droolicious and the taste didn’t disappoint. The chips were very good too. There’s only one way to describe this – food envy.

Beef Burger The little one slept through the entire lunch, which was a bonus for us – peace and quiet. Couldn’t ask for more.

Mighty Mighty Cue and Brew

It seems like Brisbane’s love for American food has grown in the past year with quite a few new American restaurants opening up.  Mighty Mighty is one such restaurant that I recently stumbled across. It is located just a stones throw away from the popular James Street Market in the Valley. Whilst parking can be a nightmare in that area sometimes, thankfully they offer 3 hours complimentary undercover parking on Connor Street with validation.

The restaurant’s layout suggests they are going for the minimalist modern approach. The menu offers soul food and a wide selection of craft beer.

For starters, we ordered Jalapeño Corn Bread ($3.5pp). It was well baked and held together nicely. The scent of jalapeño was evident but the flavour not overpowering. The butter / spread accompanied it well but it could be eaten without also.

For mains we shared a plate of Mighty Mighty Hot Wings ($14) and a Slider Board ($19).

We opted for the politically correct hot wings, described as a ‘mild pepper hot sauce’. The flavour was good but was not hot at all so maybe next time we will try some of the others. The menu included 7 other varieties some of which looked pretty interesting such as “sriracha honey and garlic” and “Cola BBQ”.

The slider board was served with fries and Mayo and had 3 varieties: pulled brisket, pulled pork and popcorn shrimp. They were all pretty good but surprisingly the popcorn shrimp stole the show. The fries were also pretty good, dusted with paprika for a bit of extra kick. The pulled beef and pork were really tender and seasoned well.

If we had more appetite we would have tried the ribs. Perhaps we will return again.

Baby Shower – Elephant Theme

The excitement is building up for the arrival of our little one.  There’s less than 6 weeks to go and the baby is kicking more than ever as a constant reminder of his existence.

There is no better way to celebrate this time than to have a baby shower.  Last month, we had an Elephant Themed Baby Shower.  Not only are baby elephants cute, but they also symbolises strength and wisdom.

I found some pretty elephant cutlery and decorations from our local discount store which was perfect for the occasion.

Since I have gestational diabetes and am not allowed any soft drinks, I bought a couple dozen bottles of mineral water and added our own customised elephant labels.

For bonbonniere, I made elephant fondant cookies.  I used the tried and tested recipe from one of my previous posts.

To top it off, my cake buddy Ingrid blessed us with a chocolate ganache cake with Prince Elephant and Rainbow.  How cute is that!

We were truly blessed and showered with love from all our friends who attended the party.  Can’t wait for the little one to come and to introduce him to the world 🙂

Kabuki Teppanyaki

I have always wanted to visit a Teppanyaki restaurant in Brisbane ever since I was introduced to it by a friend over 5 years ago.  Teppanyaki is a style of Japanese cuisne that uses an iron griddle to cook food.  Some restaurants add a bit of theatrical flair with the cooking and serving of the food.   Kabuki Teppanyaki at Stamford Plaza has been on my wish list ever since I found out they do teppanyaki with the theatrical style.

For a little treat this week I joined the Supper Club ladies for a night out.   All of us ordered the Kanpai Special Teppanyaki ($39.50) that is only available on Monday to Thursday.  It consisted of two selections of meat or seafood from the Group A and Group B menu plus salad, appetiser, miso soup, vegetables, fried rice and fruit.  I chose Salmon and Moreton Bay Buys while the others chose a combination of Scallops, Chicken and Lobster Tail.

Firstly, I will start with reviewing the food.  For starters we had garden salad, sweet & sour salmon and miso soup.  I only had the miso soup which was good as far as miso soup goes, nothing extraordinary.   My friend who had the salad and sweet and sour salmon said it was just average.

The chef then went on to cook our dishes on the griddle. My salmon was cooked very well done, just as I wanted it (pregnancy diet doesn’t show any grace for undercooked food).  It was well seasoned, tasty and not dry at all as one would expect from a well-done salmon.

An assortment of vegetables (wombok, oyster mushrooms, etc) were cooked and served next.

The moreton bay bugs were cooked to perfection – soft and tender.

The lobster tail however was a bit tough and chewy.   I wasn’t sure if that was meant to be, but didn’t like it as much in comparison to the moreton bay bugs.

Following that came the theatrical experience.  The chef gave each one of us a small bowl to catch the flying egg.  I decided to opt out as the excitement (stress) might be a bit too much for the baby.  Either his tossing skills were good or my friends had good catching skills, all of them managed to catch the raw eggs without it breaking and spilling all over them.

The chef then went on to cook us fried rice and served it up on bowls and asked us to catch.  Again, the ladies didn’t fail to impress by successfully catching their bowl of rice.

Even though I did not participate in the theatrics, I really enjoyed watching them.  One of the other station ordered something different and there were flames flaring up on their cooking station.

To end the meal, we were served a small plate of fruit each.

It was fun to watch the chef cook in front of us and even more exciting when he started throwing food and asking you to catch them! We had a really fun night topped with good food.  I am glad I finally get to tick another restaurant off my wish list.

Cafe in Tokyo

Cafe in Tokyo has become our new breakfast hangout. Nestled within a small shopping complex on Algester Road they offer a unique dining experience serving both a breakfast menu and Japanese menu throughout the day.

Their breakfast menu contains the standard faire of things like eggs benedict, french toast and pancakes but many of them have a small twist, such as savoury mince served with sour dough and feta (which lifts it to a new level).

On this particular occasion we both ordered the Sakura Breakfast ($9.5) which comes with eggs, maple bacon, sausages, fries, baked beans, assortment of vegetables (e.g.: tomato, pumpkin, spinach, asparagus) and toast-bread.  The assortment of vegetables did not necessarily compliment the meal, but with that amount of food on the plate, we were happy to leave it untouched.  This big plate of food was quite reasonably priced at only $9.50.

Sakura Breakfast D ordered a skinny mocha ($4.20) which he seemed pretty satisfied with.

Mocha Overall, the meal was satisfactory.  We saw signs that dogs are welcomed for outdoor dining.  Bonus points for being a dog friendly cafe! We will definitely return with our little Fluffball!
