I was asked by a colleague of mine to make a cake for her friend’s baby shower. It was themed around ‘Rainbow’, so she specifically requested a Rainbow Cake.
I looked around for ideas and found that the ‘naked’ style cake has become a recent trend. This style is perfect for a Rainbow Cake because it shows the vibrant colour of the cake without hiding it in plain sight.
My colleague agreed with the suggestion so I went off and made 7 layers of coloured cake.
With naked style cakes, it is important to be precise as you cannot hide the imperfections using icing. Every layer of the cake batter and icing was carefully measured to ensure its consistency.
When it came time to assemble the cake I found it easier to put each iced layer in the fridge for at least 5 minutes. This sets the buttercream so that it doesn’t leak to the side when the next layer is stacked on top. It is quite a time-consuming process, but it is definitely worth it.
The cake stood out by itself and didn’t need much decoration. I am very happy with how this turned out and will definitely recommend a ‘naked’ style cake again.
