Gum Paste Roses from Cake Decorating Class

Last Sunday, my cake buddy Ingrid & I started our second series of cake decorating class at CakeAge.  We were looking forward to enrich our skills with a 4-weeks series of roses and square cake.  After devoting the second half of last year to my postgraduate studies, I was really keen to get back to cake decorating this year!

The goal of the first lesson was to create beautiful life-like roses.  We started off by deciding the colour of the rose.  After a few tries, I finally got the right pink for my rose.

Next, we moved on to cover the rose cone.

Then, we added petals.

Half Sugar Roses

Three hours later and a few layers of petals, this is what we have achieved.

Gum Paste Roses

For me, the hardest part in this lesson was to roll out the gum paste paper thin.  Both my arms were sore for the next couple of days and I have just found the perfect reason for getting a pasta machine!
